January 2025 Newsletter

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2025!

The relationship between AI and materials science is a very interesting one. Emerging AI advances have the potential to revolutionise materials discovery. In turn, new materials can unlock the next generation of devices powering AI. Within the APRIL AI Hub, we are excited to contribute to these exciting developments.  I am really pleased that we have recruited talented people with complementary skills, who will help push the boundaries of this field.

WHO: Professor Simone Stumpf presents ‘Supporting Stakeholders to Assess AI: Using the PHAWM Approach to Develop Responsible AI’

WHEN: Friday 17th of January 2025 at 13:00pm

Assessing AI to make sure it is ethical and responsible has, until now, been left solely in the hands of AI experts. There is no agreement of what counts as ‘good enough’ to be acceptable to stakeholders, including ones who ultimately use the AI or are affected by its outputs. PHAWM, one of three RAI UK-funded keystone projects, is driving change in AI testing and evaluation through the novel concept of participatory AI auditing, where a diverse set of stakeholders without a background in AI, such as domain experts, regulators, decision subjects and end-users, are empowered to undertake audits of predictive and generative AI, either individually or collectively.

Outputs will include workbenches that support stakeholders in auditing AI, with audits embedded in methodologies that define how, when and who carries out the audit. The focus will then move to training stakeholders to carry out the audits, to embed project outputs in practice. The team will work towards a certification framework for AI solutions, democratising AI development and ensuring that AI is safe and trustworthy.

WHO: Dr. Santhosh Sivasubramani presents ‘Rebooting Computing and The APRIL - The Intertwined Road Ahead’

WHEN: 31st January 2025 at 13:00 pm

The ongoing miniaturization of CMOS technology is pushing the boundaries of traditional computing, necessitating a shift known as Rebooting Computing. This change is driven by the need for more energy-efficient computing, especially in edge and mobile environments. Beyond-CMOS technologies like spintronics utilizing electron spin to lower energy usage are emerging as viable solutions. However, developing these technologies requires more than just hardware innovations; effective design, optimisation, and scaling tools are essential. The APRIL AI Hub plays a crucial role here by integrating AI with hardware development to enhance the creation of advanced devices and facilitate more powerful AI systems. This talk will highlight the interdependence of AI and hardware in driving next-generation computing, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts in hardware, materials, and AI to meet modern computing challenges.

Meet the Independent Advisory Board (IAB) Chair

Ian Donald

First let me introduce myself, I am Ian Donald Beng, CEng MIET, and have had a distinguished career in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, having recently retired after 38 years from Siemens plc, Motion Control as Head of Research and Development. I was delighted to be invited to Chair the APRIL Independent Advisory Board (IAB) as I believe the APRIL Hub can make a real contribution to the long-term success of Electronic Engineering within the UK and enhance our global reputation in AI and electronics.

The IAB aims to provide strategic guidance to the APRIL Hub, enhancing its alignment with industry demands and boosting the UK's global standing in AI and electronics.  One of the most important aspects of the APRIL AI Hub is to create a collaborative ecosystem involving academia, industry, government and the public to foster advancements in AI within electronics, urging industry engagement for a dynamic future shaped by AI. I actively encourage feedback and participation from the community to ensure the Hub effectively supports the evolving needs of the industry.

One of the most important aspects of the APRIL AI Hub is to create a continuing legacy which ultimately requires us to create a thriving ecosystem where all partners – academia, industry, government and the public can come together and engage, share and develop thinking to create real value through AI within the Electronics community.

‘Materials for AI, AI for Materials’ Conference

In February, Pillar One researcher, Ben Rowlinson, will be jetting off to South Korea to present in the Nature Conference on ‘Materials for AI, AI for Materials’ which will explore a unique convergence of artificial intelligence and materials science. Ben will presenting a poster titled: "Bandgap Prediction of Two-Dimensional Materials in ALEXANDRIA Database using a Gradient-Boosted Feature Selection Approach".

Good Luck, Ben!

Team Building Workshop

The APRIL team was delighted by a visit from life coach, Flora Veis, who delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking day of well-being and team-building activities that encouraged us to explore new perspectives and challenge our usual ways of thinking

We began with a focus on individual well-being and then moved onto team-building exercises which helped us strengthen our collaboration and communication skills. Each activity was tailored to highlight our individual strengths while fostering a sense of unity and trust within the team.

It was evident that everyone left feeling invigorated and more connected. We are excited to integrate these practices into our daily routines and look forward to seeing the positive impact on our team dynamics.

Special thanks to Flora for her expertise and to everyone who participated with such enthusiasm!

Outreach Updates

APRIL elves busy with Christmas orders!

Approximately 2000 copies of APRIL and the Tower of Techport have been delivered to local schools across Edinburgh. Our dedicated APRIL Christmas elves worked hard to ensure that every participating school received their copies just in time for the holiday season! We're looking forward to visiting schools in 2025, bringing engaging outreach activities that inspire and educate. Stay tuned for more updates on our upcoming initiatives!
