EDI Engine Workshop with Royal Academy of Engineering

10:00 - 13:00 Larch Lecture Theatre, The Nucleus, Thomas Bayes Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3FG

The EDI Workshop with Yohanes Scarlett, Policy and Research Advisor, from the Royal Academy of Engineering will be held in the Larch Lecture Theatre in The Nucleus on 19th February 2026 from 10am – 1pm.

This talk/workshop will discuss equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the field of engineering, and how we can align with D&I professionals, CEOs, chief executives, and leaders in data knowledge to improve EDI across the four Ps outlined in the EDI Engine report: People, Products & Services, Partners, and Processes.

If you would like to join online, please contact APRIL@ed.ac.uk

Session Description

An interactive workshop exploring the Royal Academy of Engineering’s EDI Engine report and what its evidence means for engineering practice. Yohanes Scarlett (RAEng) will share key findings on the business and engineering benefits of equity, diversity and inclusion across the “4 Ps” — People, Products & Services, Partners, and Processes — and why “the default is a design choice” in the systems engineers build and work within. Participants will then take part in a hands-on group design sprint to create an ultra-inclusive engineering workspace, considering accessibility, psychological safety and hybrid participation, and will share ideas in a structured plenary. Attendees will leave with practical takeaways on inclusive design and inclusive leadership that can be applied in academia and industry.

Biography

Yohanes Scarlett is a Diversity & Inclusion research and policy Advisor at the Royal Academy of Engineering, where he leads a high-impact EDI research programme shaping national conversations on equity in engineering. He was a principal researcher on the Hamilton Commission and has spearheaded flagship publications including EDI Engine, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in Engineering – A Decade in Focus, and Inclusive Cultures in Engineering 2023. Yohanes regularly briefs APPGs, policy makers, and industry leaders, and founded the Academy’s BAME staff network. Earlier, he helped launch the Academy’s Leaders in Innovation Fellowships in 2014, bringing over 100 international engineers to the UK for intensive training.

He is also the author of the pioneering Engineering Ethnicity Index (EEI), developed in collaboration with major engineering employers and now being rolled out across the sector. As EEI Advisor at AFBE-UK, Yohanes chairs the Ethnic Network Leaders Forum, convening ERG leads from over 15 organisations to drive collective action on race equity in engineering.

Born in West London to Jamaican parents, Yohanes’s professional practice is rooted in community-led inclusion, shaped by youth work across North Kensington and Shepherd’s Bush and volunteering with the Black women’s charity WILDE. He holds a BA (Hons) in Politics & International Relations from the University of Westminster and was named Onvero’s Inclusive Influencer of the Year (2025) and the US Embassy Young Ethnic Minority Leadership Programme (2014).
