October 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of the APRIL AI Hub’s monthly newsletter.

The APRIL AI Hub brings together the artificial intelligence (AI) and electronics communities to develop AI-driven tools aimed at improving productivity throughout the electronics supply chain. We focus on everything from materials discovery to device design and testing, helping push the boundaries of what’s possible in the field.

We were happy to see over 160 attendees at our Online Launch in September and look forward to our First Annual Summit in December. Interested in collaborating?

APRIL is launching!

Online Launch

The APRIL AI Hub is now officially launched! On the 25th of September, we introduced the APRIL team and our fantastic Pillar Leads to the AI and electronics community where we discussed the different functions and ambitions of the Hub. Each pillar discussed their exciting research areas and welcomed interesting questions from viewers. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

If you weren’t able to join, head to our website where you can watch the recording here.

APRIL AI Hub First Annual Summit

This December the APRIL AI Hub is delighted to host our first annual summit event at the Edinburgh Futures Institute which has been recognised in the top five Prix Versailles’ World’s Most Beautiful Campuses List.

Our Director, Professor Themis Prodromakis as well as our esteemed Pillar Leads, will introduce the Hub to industry partners and stakeholders, and liaise with them to ensure close collaboration with industry from the foundation of our Hub. We are excited to develop strong network links and start supporting the whole supply chain of the electronics industry with our research and innovation. If you are interested in attending the event, contact us at APRIL@ed.ac.uk for more information.

APRIL in the Community

Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering (ERPE)

We were very pleased to represent APRIL at the recent partnership collaborations event with Engineers from Heriot-Watt University as part of the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering (ERPE). We heard lightening talks from Early Career Researchers from both Universities which gave us an insight into the breadth and depth of the exciting new research being undertaken across ERPE. Alongside other research projects, we showcased what we are doing to raise awareness and encourage interest and potential collaborations.

Doors Open Day 2024

Every September, Scotland’s largest free festival, the ‘Doors Open Day’, welcomes the public to explore various buildings and institutions across the country for free. The APRIL Hub joined in with a stand in our Kings Building Campus where we welcomed over 2000 visitors including loads of future engineers! We look forward to opening our doors again in 2025!

APRIL Seed Funding Competition –
Now Open for Applications!

The APRIL Seed Funding competition invites proposals to advance AI-driven innovation in the electronics and semiconductor industries. Funding of up to £50,000 per project is available, with an expectation that the proposal will indicate how matched funding will be leveraged to maximise impact. Proposals should align with APRIL’s research pillars and capabilities, fostering cutting-edge developments in these key sectors.

Team Updates

Dr Ben Rowlinson

The APRIL AI Hub welcomes our new Pillar One researcher, Ben Rowlinson. Ben joins us from the University of Southampton where he completed his BEng degree in Electronic Engineering before completing his PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2023. His research work broadly addresses novel and emerging materials for electronic devices alongside using heterogeneous integration paradigms to enhance functionality. Prior to joining the APRIL Hub, he was working on a post-doc at the University of Southampton developing novel p-type metal oxide materials and deposition techniques. In his spare time, he can often be found with his nose in a book, running up the steepest hills around in brightly coloured shorts or playing the drums in local bands spanning prog rock, jazz and funk.

Dr Santhosh Sivasubramani

We also warmly welcome our new Pillar Five researcher, Santhosh Sivasubramani.  Santhosh joins us from Hyderabad, India where he completed his Masters and Doctoral degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).  His research includes rebooting computing architecture design tailored towards beyond CMOS digital IC design alongside graphene nanofabrication and modelling. Alongside his research, Santhosh is also a freelance science journalist who reports for India Science Wire a DST initiative and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Santhosh has recently moved to Edinburgh, his first time leaving his home country and is excited to explore this new culture and meet new people!

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Plan

The APRIL AI Hub is firmly committed to fostering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) as we believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation and enrich our research. We have developed an EDI plan for the APRIL AI Hub which outlines the different ways we will be addressing systemic barriers, creating more inclusive environments, and promoting equitable participation across disciplines. The plan places emphasis on evaluation and feedback so that we are constantly evolving in response to new insights and community needs. Our vision is clear, we will not just be participants in the dialogue on diversity and inclusion, but we will be leaders and set precedents that inspire change beyond our immediate sphere to the wider academic and technological communities.
